“I was in secondary school when I discovered Onyeka Onwenu.

I didn’t find her from ‘One Love’ or ‘Dancing in the Sun’, which my folks, similar to every other person across Nigeria, adored. Indeed, even Ekwe, over which my dad and I frequently reinforced, came later.

No, I found her with ‘Greatest Love’, which I actually view as the most gorgeous melody I heard. I saw her in the music video telling the declaration of tracking down Christ and discovering a sense of reconciliation, and something about the lady on the lectern made me fall in love.

I fell terribly, foolishly, bounteously enamored with her. I was fixated on her. I purchased each tape of hers, asked my aunts to take me to each show, I watched each interview I could find. I loved her.

I was besotted.

When I turned into the maker of New Sunrise with Funmi Iyanda in 2002, she was, obviously, one of the principal visitors I welcomed. She wasn’t warm, yet as usual, she was courteous and proficient. I didn’t care. To simply be conversing with her on the telephone was a fantasy come true.

When she showed up at the studio in NTA Tejuoso, used to tremendous self images, I asked her: ‘How would it be a good idea for me I address you, ma?’ She said, ‘Just call me Onyeka Onwenu’. Indeed, even the manner in which she said it seemed like music.

It is one the best distinctions of my life that I called Onyeka Onwenu aunt, and she considered me to be one of hers. It was a significant privilege to be in her presence, to see her grin, to see her dance, to have her rest on me in a real sense and allegorically, to send and get gifts from her, to hear her sing, to feast with her, to look at her, to watch her live.

To watch her skim through the world, iridescent as she was in spite of Nigeria’s many endeavors to kill her light.

I cherished her. I love her. I was fixated on her.

Besotted.

I could never stop loving her”.
