Minimum wage: Housemaids, gatemen, drivers can’t earn below N70,000 – Akpabio says

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has said Nigerian employers cannot pay their workers less than N70,000.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu approved N70,000 as the new minimum wage for workers during a meeting with labor unions. The President presents the minimum wage bill to the National Assembly for approval.

When the Senate convened, Akpabio asked those in favor of the second reading of the bill to say yes and those against it to say no.

However, Akpabio said his "night club" comment was taken out of context.

"We are still learning, even those of us who have been in the Senate for 16 years are still learning." ~l0p “But when I was talking to one of my amazing sisters who said no, I said we`re not in a nightclub where people don`t have to shout over the music.

“There is a crisis on social media and my wife called me and said they put her phone number and she gets about 2,000 to 3,000 calls a day.

“I am happy that Nigerians are happy with what is happening in this House because we are here for their benefit. I don`t want to say what they did to me.

“I won`t deliberately stigmatize any lady, I have a spouse and four little girls and I generally ask that God will lift a young lady to the most elevated peak in Nigeria strategically and in business. So Congressperson Natasha I need to apologize to you assuming that you felt offended.

“There isn`t anything I will say that wouldn`t be distorted, I believed I ought to delicate an open acknowledgment to you.”
