A Lagos lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, has filed a 1 billion naira civil rights lawsuit against Nigeria's federal government and its security agencies amid concerns over a planned nationwide protest.
Ogungbeje is targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's government and security forces for allegedly trying to prevent the upcoming "hunger protest" from August 1-10, 2014. According to Channels TV, the Federal Government is the first respondent, alongside the National Government, Security Adviser, Chief of Defense Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Nigerian Army, Inspector General of Police, Nigeria Police Force, Ministry of State Security and Director General of State Security Service.
He represents himself and other concerned Nigerian citizens who want to participate in the peaceful protests for better governance in Nigeria. Ogungbeje stressed that his lawsuit was supported by the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
